  • Racial Justice Award from the YWCA-Greater Pittsburgh, in the category of Education, for promoting “equality and justice" and "ending racism."

  • Homer D. Babbidge, Jr., Book Award for The Amistad Rebellion, given by the for the Association for the Study of Connecticut History.

  • Awarded the Sol Stetin Prize by the Sidney Hillman Foundation, a lifetime achievement award for work in the field of labor history.

New Play

  • Worked as consultant with playwright Naomi Wallace on her new play The Liquid Plain (which is based in part on The Slave Ship), commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, premiere July 6, 2013

Forthcoming Conference

  • "The Future of Atlantic, Transnational, and World History" will feature keynote lectures by Marcel van der Linden (International Institute for Social History) on labor; Lara Putnam (University of Pittsburgh) on race; Richard Drayton (King’s College London) on empire; and Vincent Brown (Harvard University) on resistance.
